In June 2011 it was estimated that there were 1300 homeless people in Columbia. By January 2013 the estimate had increased to 1700 in the downtown area, 4000 within city limits. Homelessness is attributed to multiple causes: alcohol and drug addiction, mental illness, prison releases, people down on their luck, and people with circumstances beyond their control. No matter what the reason, the problem of homelessness is here and worsening. For the past 8 years, Pastor Oscar Gadsden and his volunteers have been leading people to Christ, providing individualized help and counseling, and assisting those who were/are ready to return to society.
